Having a puppy can sometimes be like having a toddler running around causing chaos and destruction and every pet parent knows the destructive wake they can leave behind them. But puppies only really stay puppies – in the physical sense – for the first year. With these physical changes, behavioural changes occur in their temperament, activity levels and personality, all things that are shaped on how we decide to raise our puppies.

Know what you’re signing up for

When selecting a puppy it is a big life decision that should be taken seriously. They are here for the long run and should be cared and loved from the moment you set eyes on the perfect one. It is always good to have an idea of what kind of dog you would want to live with – remember you’ll have a puppy for 1 year and a dog for another 10- 15 years. Taking a look at the parents is always a good indication of what the puppy will grow up to be like and something everyone should take into consideration.

Early Training

It is always a good idea to start training at an early age. The saying “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks” isn’t exactly true but it’s not easy either. If you don’t train your puppy it will most certainly train you and like a typically teenager, in their youthful months (4 months) they will try and challenge authority. Puppy preschool is a great starter to get your puppy ready and also you for a long 12 months ahead.

Puppy Bathroom Routine 

Toilet training isn’t easy, especially in the beginning, but dogs a quick learners. Sticking to a strict bathroom routine can help ease the stress of cleaning up puppy puddles all around the house. Routinely giving them a toilet break first thing in the morning, after each meal and before bed can help them learn quickly when the next toilet opportunity is coming.

Socialise at an Early Age 

As children we enjoyed socializing and making friends with other kids, puppies are exactly the same.
